A Look At Time by the American conceptual artist Peter Downsbrough features 44 black and white photographs taken between 1978 and 2019 in European and American cities. All photographs are vertical, and placed above a black line that runs from page to page. By their use of graphic elements, signs, light and shadow, the images condense the cityscapes and fragments of urban architecture almost to the point of abstraction. In the photographs, the sequence and point of view mark the perception of time and movement in space. This temporality is highlighted by the presence of straight lines and short words whose positioning and spacing vary.
A Look At Time, edited by Thomas Zander and with an essay by Jean-Paul Deridder, is published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, Cologne.
